The Massapequa High School girls volleyball team raised more than $5,000 to support breast cancer research, continuing its long-standing tradition of giving back to the community.
Money raised at the annual Dig Pink game on Oct. 4 will be only part of a districtwide donation to the Side-Out Foundation, an organization which supports the development of treatments for breast cancer patients. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and each Massapequa sports team will host a fundraiser game. Several student organizations are also contributing to the effort, such as the National Art Honor Society which did face and hand painting in the gymnasium lobby. Volunteers painted pink heart and ribbons. The Booster Club organized a raffle, with prizes including gift baskets and Mets, Rangers and Billy Joel concert tickets.
The 12th annual Dig Pink event included varsity and junior varsity contests against Hicksville’s girls volleyball teams, a performance by the cheerleaders and the stand-up flower ceremony. Massapequa players presented pink carnations to their opponents, and fans filled out and held up cards in honor of people in their lives affected by cancer.
“Everyone knows someone who is affected by breast cancer, or any form of cancer,” said varsity coach Kelley Collins. “The girls know that they’re here for a good cause while they get to play their favorite sport. Dig Pink is important to them because they can show their support and actually make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.”
