Glenn’s National Honor Society runs Adopt-A-Family program
Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s National Honor Society ran the school’s annual Adopt-A-Family holiday program this month, joined by the school’s Community Service Club, World Language Honor Society and Student Council. Students sign up to adopt a local Elwood family in need and provide them gifts that they are unable to provide for each other, making sure to package the presents and ensuring the donations are packaged and delivered in time for the families to receive the presents by Dec. 22.
“Honor Society means a lot to me, and I know for everyone in it, giving back to the community is a great way for us all to make sure that those we may not know but care about are getting everything that they need,” NHS President Abby Rothleder said. “It feels good for me and for my fellow officers to give back, especially doing this project, because it’s giving back to people so close to home. We may not see what everyone’s going through in our local community, so knowing that we’re able to make a difference is super special.”

Four Rocky Point students lauded for extraordinary deed
Four students from the Rocky Point School District were among the few dozen local students recognized for their participation in the Brookhaven Town Polar Plunge as part of Team ExtraOrdinary.
Rocky Point High School sophomores Ava Dantuono and Ashly Malandrino and seniors Christian Dantuono and Max Marte helped Team ExtraOrdinary raise
$13,000 for Special Olympics by getting sponsored to jump in the Long Island Sound in late November.
Team ExtraOrdinary started in 2013 when Robert Fitton started plunging with his cousin and one friend in honor of his brother who was born with Down syndrome, and from there, year after year, he has added friends to join the team. His sister, Mary, joined as a co-captain when she was old enough to plunge. The team is composed entirely of young people, and since inception, they have raised over $100,000 that has benefited over 250 Special Olympians and has grown on a yearly basis.
The group was honored by the Town of Brookhaven, led by Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner, who is from Rocky Point, and Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, who recognized the outstanding efforts of the team and proclaimed Nov. 20 as Team “Extra-Ordinary” Day in the Town of Brookhaven.

Plunge for a reason
Members of the Bellport High School Athletes Helping Others club recently participated in the 12th annual Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai. The students took the plunge in the frigid Long Island Sound, raising more than $2,000 toward a heartwarming cause — the Special Olympics.
“It’s an event that really makes you feel good,” said club adviser Peter Grossi. “Despite the temporary, bone-chilling pain, Bellport students left the beach with a smile on their faces, proud of their plunge and proud to have helped a cause that the Athletes Helping Others club works so hard toward assisting. Bellport High School is persistent in supporting the community.”
