About:
The students at Alleghany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District have been learning what it means to be a good citizen who celebrates diversity and shows kindness and respect to others. Second grade students in Kara Kilmeade’s class recently took part in a class citizenship project in which they collected school supplies to support the Liberia Project.
The Liberia Project was started by Doc Lawson, a former professional U.S. soccer player, who was born in a small village in Liberia. He made it his mission to go back to Liberia and help his community. The Liberia Project is building a school for the children of Tosor, a small village in the State of Cape in Liberia, West Africa. The village is 178 years old with a population of 650 citizens. Construction on the school is said to be completed by Nov. 6, 2021.
The school, which will accommodate students in grades kindergarten through six, will be the first school in the entire state that will have electricity and running water. Additionally, the school will have a library and a modern kitchen that will supply lunch for all the students at no cost.
“We collected so many things for the school,” said student Lucy Baumbach. “We got to show that even if you’re really young, you can still make a difference.”
Additionally, the Lindenhurst Union Free School District has approved the donation of Wonders Reading materials that are no longer used by the district to support the Liberia Project’s mission.
