About:
In their third year of hosting Mental Health Awareness games, the team at Fontbonne Softball is committed to continuing this important tradition.
Coach Jacqui Losi and Anna DeVitto, Director of Athletics, emphasize to their student-athletes the significance of vulnerability, particularly in addressing mental health. They believe that fostering an environment where open discussions about mental health are welcomed can help break the stigma surrounding it. Their first mental health awareness game was held during the 2022 season, and they have continued to host one every year since.
Jacqui, the head coach of Fontbonne Softball, shared her personal journey with mental health. As someone who has experienced anxiety and depression, she understands the challenges both on and off the field. Before becoming a coach in 2022, she began attending therapy, a topic rarely discussed at the time. Her goal is to ensure that no one feels the isolation and confusion she once felt. Jacqui acknowledges her mental health struggles as part of her life, rather than defining them. During her first year coaching at Fontbonne, they implemented Mental Health/Team Bonding days, fostering deeper connections among teammates beyond the field.
Creating a space where athletes feel comfortable discussing mental health and seeking help is paramount for Jacqui. She openly shares with her team that she attends therapy and is not immune to making mistakes. This transparency has resonated, especially with those who may have felt alone in their struggles. Just as in sports, raising awareness for mental health requires teamwork.
This year, Fontbonne hosted their Mental Health Awareness game against O’Bryant on April 29th. O’Bryant’s coach, Bridget Ryan, immediately embraced the idea, demonstrating their shared commitment to the cause. The team actively selects dates for hosting special games each season. Last year, they also hosted a youth game, and this year, they’re planning a game for Best Buddies against Milton High School.
During the game, both teams wore lime green socks and belts, while Fontbonne players donned shirts with “Be Kind to Your Mind” printed on the back. Green ribbons were distributed to players, coaches, and fans in attendance, emphasizing solidarity. Fontbonne also collaborated with Morgan’s Message and referenced the Hidden Opponent and Make Mental organizations, distributing bracelets and stickers to raise awareness further.
These incredible young women at Fontbonne strive to make the world better, and their enthusiasm and determination are evident day in and day out. They’re proud to raise awareness for mental health and ensure that no one feels alone in their struggles.
