About:
Approximately 140 Valley Stream North High School students (which include student athletes) gathered on the afternoon of Feb. 15 to make 1,600 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for patrons of the Mary Brennan Inn in Hempstead. They labelled each sandwich bag with a personal inspirational message.
This effort was a collaborative project that involved members of the National Honor Society and English as a New Language classes. The two groups worked together as part of the ENL Buddy Program, which serves as a mentoring opportunity and fosters friendships. Students donated all of the food items and the Senior High School Student Council contributed other supplies. North has held similar activities in past years, and this one boasted the largest number of sandwich donations to date.
