About:
Student council members from Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools recently raised $297 for the Wounded Warrior Project through a Valentines-themed fundraiser. The Wounded Warrior Project is a non-profit organization that supports veterans and service members who have obtained physical or mental injury or illness while serving in the military on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
Each February, the student council members facilitate a Valentine’s for Veterans program at the school. Due to COVID-19 restrictions this year, the students found a new way to honor veterans. With the help of student council co-advisers Christina Liontonia and Jamie Manzi, the students brainstormed different ways that they could help these military veterans and researched organizations that supported them. Once they decided on the Wounded Warrior Project, the student council members drafted a letter to Gardiners Avenue families describing the non-profit organization and why they wanted to help. They encouraged families to donate money and decorate a heart to support their mission.
The Gardiners Avenue community showed their generosity and creativity as they sent their beautifully decorated hearts and money to the school to support the student council and the Wounded Warrior Project. Student council members worked hard to display the hearts in the school’s main hallways for all to see and enjoy.
