Alzheimer’s disease patients at Sunrise Assisted Living in Smithtown will benefit this Thanksgiving from the generosity of Smithtown High School East students.
Led by advisers Connie Smith and Jaclyn Fettinger, the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter at the school has been working to create fidget blankets to be distributed at the assisted living facility for the holiday.
Many student volunteers developed their sewing skills while enrolled in the school’s family and consumer science classes.
The Alzheimer’s patients keep the small blankets on their laps, and it allows them to have an alternative to pulling at their clothing.
“They found that it helped soothe them a little bit,” Smith said.
The FCCLA students have been working on their fidget blankets after school for three weeks.
