Students and staff throughout the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District enjoyed the return of their annual “Brave the Shave” event, hosted by the Northport High School National Honor Society.
The event raises money and awareness for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and took place at Northport High School on March 11. Students took turns in teams stepping up to the podium to have their head shaved in solidarity with children suffering from cancer and raised a total of $52,732.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is dedicated to raising money for lifesaving childhood cancer research. Each school formed their own team which included captains, volunteers and donors. The family fun afternoon included a DJ, crafts, snacks, and of course, the exciting head-shaving event. When asked why he decided to shave his head, Fifth Avenue student Joseph said “so no kid feels alone.”
The event was done virtually last year due to the pandemic; however, the excitement of the in-person activities helped draw one of the largest donations ever.
