On Saturday, September 29, 2018, the Boys and Girls varsity soccer teams hosted a fundraiser for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. This organization was chosen because of the support they continue to demonstrate to the families of our fallen heroes. This past year the Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid off the mortgages of two servicemen from the Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing in Westhampton who lost their lives defending our freedom: Tech. Sgt. Dashan Briggs of Port Jefferson Station and FDNY Lt. Christopher Raguso of Commack. Because of the Foundation, the wives and children of these heroes will have one less thing to worry about. They can continue to live in their homes without having the burden of paying a mortgage.
Our community is rich in first responders and military. Unfortunately, this can happen to anyone of us. This hit a little too close for me. My family is connected to one of the recipients of the foundation. Thank you to everyone who helped us honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice by supporting our fundraiser. We raised just over $9,200!
My hope was to fill the stands and raise as much money for a great organization that continues to step up to the plate. The question to ask is: How long will it be before the next first responder or military service person loses their life defending or protecting us? There is no question in my mind that when that day comes, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation will be there.
